Buying SelfDecode for Several People: Gifted Bundles vs. Family Plans

There are three ways to buy SelfDecode, depending on who it’s for and how many accounts you want:

An individual account for yourself.
Separate Gifted Bundles for several people, where each person gets their own account.
The Family Plan, which is one shared account for all members.

Which option is right for me?

Just for you? Choose an individual account. You finish setting up your account immediately after you complete your checkout.
For several people, each with their own account? Choose separate gifted bundles. Each person creates their own account when they receive and register their DNA test kit.
Prefer everyone's results, all under one login? Choose the Family Plan. Everyone shares one account & login, with a profile for each family member.

Option 1: An individual account

An individual account is for one person signing up for themselves. For a full walkthrough, see Quick Start Step 1: Getting Started.

Option 2: Separate Gift Bundles (each person gets their own account)

With separate gift bundles, you buy multiple bundles (Essential, Essential +, or Ultimate Bundle) at once, for different people. Gifted bundles are not the same as the Family Plans or Family Bundles. Each gift bundle is tied to its own individual DNA kit, and each person gets their own SelfDecode account with their own login and private results.

The buyer will enter one shipping address for all gifted DNA kits in the purchase. Once the kits are received, they can be distributed to the gift recipients, and they can register their own kits at their convenience. The first year of access begins when the kit is registered by the recipient.

How do gifted bundles work?

Choose your bundles on SelfDecode Gifts, and set the quantity to the number of people you’re buying for.
Receive all the kits at your preferred shipping address.
Give each recipient their kit, and let them know to register it before sending back their sample.
Each recipient registers their kit at selfdecode.com/app/register. Registering creates their account, and they then log in with their own credentials.

Each recipient gets an email when their results are ready.

If I buy 3 gifted bundles (not the Family Plan) and one is for me, how do the other 2 people sign up?

Each person creates their own account when they register their own DNA kit. This works the same whether you buy 3 Ultimate Bundles, 3 Essential+ Bundles, or 3 Essential Bundles. If one of the kits is for you, register it the same way the other two recipients will.

Do they have to be with me when I buy, or can they set up their profile later?

They don’t need to be with you. Only you complete the purchase. Each recipient sets up their own account later, whenever they register their kit.

Do I need to send them an invite or a link?

No. There’s no invite or link to send. All each recipient needs to get started is their DNA kit. Just make sure they know to register it before they send back their sample.

Are the accounts accessible by all three people, or are they password protected?

Each account is private and password protected. With gifted bundles, every person has their own account and their own login. Only that person can see their results, and no one shares an account.

Where do the kits ship?

All kits ship together to your preferred address. You then give each kit to its recipient.

When does each person’s subscription start?

Each subscription is tied to its DNA kit, so each person’s year begins when their kit is registered, not when you place the order.

Who pays for renewals?

Each person manages their own plan. When they log in, they’re prompted to add their own payment information, which is used for optional upgrades and future renewals.

Option 3: Family Plans (one shared account)

The Family Plan is one account for multiple family members, all under the same login. If you want each person to have their own login instead, choose separate Gifted Bundles, not the Family Plan.
