How to Download your raw DNA file from MyHeritage
You can download your raw DNA file from your MyHeritage account and upload it to SelfDecode to get personalized health insights from your existing DNA data. Downloading it is free and takes a few minutes, plus a quick email confirmation.
Before you start
- Use a computer or Android device. MyHeritage doesn’t allow raw DNA downloads on an iPhone or iPad.
- Sign in as the kit manager. Only the manager of the DNA kit can download the raw data file, not the person it’s assigned to.
- Make sure your results are ready. The download option only appears once your MyHeritage results are complete.
- Tested with another company and transferred your DNA to MyHeritage? Download your file from the company that originally tested you instead.
Step 1: Request your raw data file
- Sign in to your account at myheritage.com.
- Hover over the DNA tab and select Manage DNA kits.
- Find your kit, click the three dots on the right-hand side, and select Download (this may appear as Download kit).
- If you see a list called Choose what to download, select DNA data file. Don’t choose the Specialized Genomic CRAM File, which is only offered for whole genome kits and isn’t the file SelfDecode uses.
- Click Continue in the pop-up window.
- Accept MyHeritage’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click Continue.
Step 2: Download your file from the email
- Open the email MyHeritage sends to your registered email address and click the download link.
- Enter your MyHeritage password and click Download.
- Your file saves to your device’s usual downloads folder.
Important: The download link in the email expires after 24 hours. If it expires, start again from Step 1.
Step 3: Upload your file to SelfDecode
- New to SelfDecode? Start at Upload your DNA file. Once you’ve purchased the Upload Your DNA option, open your dashboard and you’ll be prompted to upload your file.
- Already have an account? Open your main dashboard (https://selfdecode.com/app/dashboard-v2/) and start your DNA file upload from there. Select MyHeritage as the service your file came from.
Upload the file exactly as you downloaded it. If it’s a .zip file, leave it zipped. Unzipping is an extra step that can corrupt your file.
Most files finish scanning within 2–5 hours. When upload volume is very high, it can take up to 12 hours. We’ll email you when your analysis is complete.
Tips for a smooth upload
- Don’t open, edit, or re-save your file before uploading.
- Keep a secure backup of your file. It contains sensitive personal information.
- Download and store your file on a private device and a secure internet connection.
Having trouble? See Troubleshooting your DNA file upload, or email support@selfdecode.com with your account email and let us know your file is from MyHeritage.
