Does SelfDecode Test APOE?

One genetic variant that has garnered significant attention in recent years is the APOE gene. In this article, we will explain what the APOE gene is, why it's important, and how SelfDecode can help you explore your APOE status.

What is APOE?

APOE, or Apolipoprotein E, is a gene that encodes a protein responsible for carrying lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. It plays a critical role in lipid metabolism and the transportation of cholesterol. APOE exists in several different forms, or alleles, the most common of which are APOE ε2, APOE ε3, and APOE ε4.

Why is APOE Important?

The APOE gene has received significant attention due to its association with the risk of various health conditions, particularly those related to cardiovascular health and neurodegenerative diseases.

Do we test for APOE?

Yes, SelfDecode's test and analysis do cover variants of the APOE gene. We provide insights into your APOE genotype, helping you understand your genetic predisposition and potential risks associated with different APOE variants.

Understanding the genetic influence of the APOE gene is crucial, but it's important to recognize that Alzheimer's risk is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic variants, genes, and environmental factors. Many individuals carrying high-risk APOE variants do not develop Alzheimer's disease, and conversely, the disease can affect those without such variants.

Please note that the APOE report is only available in consultation with a health professional. We always recommend discussing your genetic results with a healthcare professional before making any changes to gain a deeper understanding and receive tailored advice based on your unique genetic profile.

How to access your APOE report

To access your APOE report, you can select My DNA > Medical Reports from the navigation panel. In order to unlock the Medical Reports, a consultation with one of our medical professionals is required. This is due to regulatory reasons.

Our reports do not diagnose or treat health conditions. They are not a substitute for medical advice. If you're diagnosed with a certain health condition, follow your doctor's advice.

Things to Remember:

  • The scores/gauges use the latest scientific studies, but they are not perfect, and will change as the models improve.
  • People without risk variants can also develop health conditions.
  • Not everyone with risk variants will develop a health condition.
  • Genetics is not the whole story. Your health is most often a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Great news, as this means that you can often change your lifestyle to lower your risk.
  • Results might be more accurate for some ethnic groups than others. This depends on the studies used in each report.
