Ordering WGS: How It Works, Timelines, and FAQs

This article covers ordering, kit shipping, lab processing times, and common operational questions about Whole Genome Sequencing (also known as Whole Genome Analysis, or WGS). For an overview of what Whole Genome Sequencing is and what's included, see What Is Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)?

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Whole Genome Sequencing available to?

Whole Genome Sequencing is available to customers worldwide.

Can I upgrade my existing DNA kit to Whole Genome Sequencing?

Yes. If you already have a SelfDecode DNA kit, you can upgrade directly in your SelfDecode account at the upgrade price shown in-app. The system automatically prorates the cost based on your existing kit

How long does it take to get my results?

There are two stages: kit delivery usually takes about 10–15 business days (depending on your location), and lab processing takes 10–20 business days after your sample is received. Total time from order to results is typically 4–6 weeks.

Can I upload my own whole genome data from another provider?

No. Whole Genome Sequencing reports require data processed through our own pipeline. We run the full analysis from raw sequencing data (FASTQ files) through to annotations, which ensures accuracy and consistency. Third-party files (including VCF files) cannot be uploaded.

What file format will I receive for my Whole Genome Sequencing results?

Your raw data will be available for download as a VCF (Variant Call Format) file from your My Account page once your results are ready.

Can I buy WGS reports individually or only as a bundle?

Both. You can purchase reports individually, or choose one of the two bundles:

  • 30x Whole Genome Advanced Package — the analysis, plus all WGS advanced reports.
  • 30x Whole Genome Ultimate Package — the analysis, plus all WGS advanced reports, plus full access to SelfDecode's suite of reports and tools.

Current members, see current pricing and bundle details at www.selfdecode.com/app/wgs.

What's the difference between the Whole Genome packages and the Essential or Ultimate Bundles?

The Essential and Ultimate Bundles use genotyping — SelfDecode's standard DNA test, which reads about 0.1% of your genome directly and expands to ~200 million variants through imputation. The 30x Whole Genome packages use Whole Genome Sequencing — a deeper, clinical-grade read of your entire genome at 30x coverage — and unlock a different, more advanced set of reports (ACMG-Based Predisposition Report, Ultimate Rare Variant Screening, Advanced Pharmacogenomics, and the Whole Genome Genius Report).
